A world of photography

Merry Christmas & Hapy New Year

Not sure when I will get the opportunity to post this update so I thought I’d cover both Christmas & New Year greetings in one go. For us, 2013 started in the heat of Burma (Myanmar). April saw us in the very different climate of northern Norway, sailing from Bergen to Kirknes on the Hürtigruten. We found our way back to the sun in September, visiting Amorgos, Naxos and Paros. A few pictures from our Greek odyssey have now found their way onto the site - a new “Greece” page under People and a “Cyclades” page under Places.

Staying closer to home, Suffolk beckons in January with trips to Aldeburgh and Ipswich planned. As for the rest of 2014, who knows? But I will take some pictures, wherever we end up. Thanks for visiting my site. Wherever you are or plan to be as 2013 comes to a close and 2014 begins, stay safe and practice peace and goodwill to all.

Nearly Christmas!

Well, almost December anyway. I haven’t had much time for photography since visiting the Cyclades in September. But look out for some picture to make you yearn for warmer climes over the next few weeks!

As we’re talking about Christmas, there is another chance to see Helen’s jewellery at a Craft & Gift fair being held at Winchester Guildhall this Saturday (30th November). Details here.

Last few days!

Thanks to our friends at Purbeck Cottage Studios, we have been taking part in the 2013 Hampshire Open Studios event over the last week. Well worth a visit if you are in the area with 7 award-winning local photographers as well as Helen’s unique handmade jewellery. Open 11:00 to 19:00 every day over the Bank Holiday weekend.

On Stage

I’ve added a new page to hold my growing collection of pictures taken at festivals and other gigs around the country. If any of the artists featured would like copies, get in touch with me using the “Contact” link at the foot of the page. When I get time, I’ll try and add a link to the artist’s website.

Hampshire Open Studios

This year’s Hampshire Open Studios event runs from 17 to the 26 of August. I will be one of the visiting artists exhibiting at Purbeck Cottage Studios, Purbeck Cottage, Manor Road, Durley, SO32 2AF. Open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. everyday. Refreshments will be available.

Helen’s unique handmade silver and lampworked jewellery will also be on show.

All items will be for sale. Commissions welcome!

North of the Arctic Circle

To mark my wife’s significant birthday this year, we ventured north from Bergen on the Hurtigruten Coastal Ferry to the far north of Norway. Not really being cruise fans, we chose the smallest (and oldest!) boat in the Hurtigruten fleet; the MS Lofoten. Pictures to follow!

Winchester Success

Well, that was a surprise. Having not entered Winchester’s Exhibition for a number of years, as a new member I felt I should support it in 2013. I duly submitted a few images, only one or two in each of the bewildering number of classes, and sat back to wait for the results. Not only did “Refuge” win the open Colour print section, but “Godafoss in Summer” and “Warning,Lack of Definition” were awarded Certificates of Merit in the Open Projected Digital Class.

Winchester Photographic Society Annual Exhibition is open from 20 April – 12 May in the City Space at Winchester Discovery Centre. More details here

100th Southampton International Exhibition

Judging is now complete for this year’s Southampton International Exhibition of Photography. Must be one of the longest running international salons in the country, if not the world. I ended up with 5 acceptances including one certificate of merit for “Laxford Bothy”. All digital though. Must try harder with prints. To be honest, after gaining my AFIAP last year, I have had a break from entering competitions. I have put a few into Winchester’s exhibition just to see if my prints are up to at least national exhibition standard.

For those of you who live within travelling distance of Southampton, UK, there will be an exhibition of the award winning prints in West Quay shopping centre from Friday 15th March to Sunday 17th March.

More pictures from Burma

More Burma pictures added. Have you seen enough monks yet? I rather like this candid portrait of a young monk at the Mahargandaryone Monastery, although a camera club judge (who shall remain nameless!) gave it short shrift in a recent print competition. They all queue for their meals and the lines of maroon and pink make for interesting photos. Unfortunately there are rather a lot of tourists there who are not very respectful. I hope they don’t spoil it for future visitors.

Burma in pictures

Selecting images from Burma to include on my website has been a challenge. It is not a country of dramatic landscapes, at least not the parts we visited. In a country where there are half a million monks, it is perhaps not surprising that a high number of my pictures are of people in maroon (or pink, in the case of nuns) robes and the temples that are the focus for their worship.

Happy New Year

Possibly a bit late for new year greetings, but we have only just returned to the UK. The temperature is taking some getting used to after spending the last 2 weeks in Burma (Myanmar) where it was low to mid 30’s in the day but a little chilly some evenings. Photos will follow!
