A world of photography

Complements of the Season

It has been unseasonably warm here in the Pennines for the past few days. We even have a tree in blossom! As we are currently planning our photographic "January Jaunt" for 2017 I thought I'd post an image from 2016's excursion to North Norfolk. There were not many people braving the near gale force winds when we visited Cromer Pier.

Wherever you plan to be this Christmas, and whatever your race, religion or creed, enjoy the holidays.

UPDATE - 14 December 2016. Just found out that this was one of 3 images I had accepted in the Yorkshire International Salon.

Steampunks in Howarth

Steampunk seems to be inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Its most recognisable features utilise anachronistic technologies or inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them.

Steampunks’ clothing and fashions have developed from the aesthetics of Victorian-era fiction modifying utilitarian objects into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical style.

Autumn comes to Caderdale

The autumn colours are looking good this year in Calderdale. This image was taken less than 10 minutes walk from my house in Nutclough Wood.

Normality returns

Or what passes for normality in this part of the world! After the success of Open Studios (thanks to everyone who came) I went back into the "Lightroom" to revisit some pictures that needed to be re-worked. This was taken in Hurst Castle in Hampshire.

HBOS 2016 - We are open!

Last day tomorrow (Sunday 3 July) of the 2016 Hebden Bridge Open Studios Event. We are open from 10:00 to 18:00. If you are in the area, come up and see some of my prints together with Helen's unique, hand-crafted jewellery.

A new "Events" section has been added. There are some wonderful festivals in the Calder Valley and further afield that are about more then music so didn't really fit under the "On Stage" heading. First two to be included are Hebden Royd's Alternative Christmas event on 26 June 2016 and the Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade on June 26 2016.

Hebden Bridge Open Studios 2016

Busy day today printing some limited edition images for Hebden Bridge Open Studios in a couple of weeks time. Now to get them mounted and framed! I'm really looking forward to showing some of my work. Let's hope lots of people think it's worth the trek up the hill to see it!

Dave Swarbrick 1941-2016

A more personal picture this week. Fairport Convention were one of many bands that provided the soundtrack to my teenage years. In those days we would gather at the house of the friend whose parents had the best stereo system and listen to records for hours on end. Dave Swarbrick was a tremendously influential English fiddle player and songwriter who worked with many of the great names of folk and beyond. RIP Swarb.

The streets are alive!

The middle weekend of May saw the town crowded with all kinds of musicians, dancers and visitors for the Hebden Bridge Folk & Roots Festival. Sadly my trusty 50-135mm f2.8 lens that I usually use for pictures at concerts was away being repaired (don't ask!) so there are fewer images of actual performances than I would have liked. But here is one of a fiddler busking on Bridge Gate

And this week's winner is..

Wednesday the 11th saw the judging of the 3rd round of the bi-monthly competitions at Hebden Bridge Camera Club. Three of my images did quite well including this one which I had titled "Answering the Call". The judge was relieved that it was a telephone call and awarded it 1st place in the prints.

Picture of the week

One week to go until the Hebden Folk & Roots Festival and I am hoping to get a chance to take a few pictures of the wonderful acts that all be performing. Skinny Lister aren't on the bill but here is a picture of them from last summer.

Picture of the week

Closer to home for this week's picture of the week. Taken on the moors above Lydgate near Todmorden. Just up the valley from where I live in Hebden Bridge. In this case I think monochrome suits the rather stark environment. Like imageplant's new Facebook page to get the latest pictures.

Picture of the Week

Not necessarily taken in the week. But a picture I haven't posted online before. This one is from Vietnam. Schools in Asian countries often lack the technological wizardry of their European counterparts. But the children are almost always smiling.

I'm excited to announce that imageplant now has its own page on Facebook. Use the FB icon at the foot of every page on this site to head on over and gives us a "like".

Hebden Bridge Open Studios

Here at the Orchard we will be open every day from 10:00 to 18:00 for visitors to see some of my photos in the flesh as well as Helen's unique, handmade artisan jewellery. Come up and see us. We are just behind the Birchcliffe Centre.

New look!

With computer screens and even phones and tablets having ever higher resolution screens, some of the older pictures on the site were looking a bit small. So instead of just uploading larger images I decided to change the whole site! Finding higher resolutions of all the images will take a little while so keep checking back for more updates. Please let me know if you find anything that doesn't work as it should.

Other planned enhancements include a lightbox type view for the galleries (enabled already!) and, who knows, maybe some new pictures too!
